Earthquake-ravaged Japan needs Aussie produce
AUSTRALIAN farmers can expect a jump in demand and the price of their produce following the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan. With the continuing nuclear scare as a result of the disasters, it is likely Japan will increase its imports, the latest National Australia Bank analysis says. It is good news for Australia, which exports more agricultural goods to Japan than any other country. The new export demand is also likely to drive up commodity prices over the medium term, particularly for beef, pork, chicken and rice, according to NAB analysis. The March 11 disasters largely affected the North Tohoku region, which is Japan's fourth-largest food bowl, producing about 20 per cent of the country's rice crop.
